I honestly canвЂ™t tell, even as someone who tries to pay pretty close attention to Destiny lore. SIVA makes its presence known with spiky red tentacles threading all throughout the countryside, and it imbues Fallen with new armor and weapons, but by the end of the questline I still had a pretty fundamental question. Rather, the story so far is mostly about SIVA, and how we need to stop the Fallen from doingвЂ¦something with it.

The tale of the lost Iron Lords is told through a few welcome cutscenes where you actually get to see your GuardianвЂ™s face for the first time in ages, and I suspect that weвЂ™ll learn more about the Lords when Saladin starts giving out quests so we can acquire each of their artifacts, but I havenвЂ™t figured out how thatвЂ™s triggered yet. If you havenвЂ™t played in a while, chances are youвЂ™ll be able to jump right in here without worrying about your light level too much. I had no problem with any of them, and didnвЂ™t actually die at all during the main storyline, which isnвЂ™t terribly surprising because this is how things usually go. I was not maxed out on light before this expansion hit, but the missions start with relatively low light requirements, and top out at about 320 by the end. YouвЂ™re mostly fighting a collection of SIVA-infected Fallen called вЂњSplicers,вЂќ being sent out on missions by Saladin, his archivist and his scout, who all reside in the Iron Temple. It took me maybe 90В minutes to beat five or six new story missions in the main quest. But IвЂ™ve played enough to get at least a general sense of the expansion. I have not yet tried the new вЂњKill ConfirmedвЂќ Crucible mode (yes, I know itвЂ™s not called that) and the new Wrath of the Machine raid isnвЂ™t out until Friday. So far, IвЂ™ve completed all the main story missions, mucked around in Patrol, started at least one exotic quest, done both new Strikes and fallen off FelwinterвЂ™s Peak at least once.

ItвЂ™s something that the Iron Lords of old fought in ages past, and it killed them all except Lord Saladin, who tasks you with restoring the Iron Temple at the top of FelwinterвЂ™s Peak, which serves as the gameвЂ™s third social space for quests, bounties, vendors and so on. Instead of an entirely new zone like the Dreadnaught, Rise of Iron expands Old Russia by letting players into the вЂњPlaguelandsвЂќ where a mysterious, corruptive threat called SIVA is being wielded by the Fallen (or wielding the Fallen? Unclear). Rise of Iron is a true expansion in the sense that itвЂ™s actually building out the map.
